Ms. Brown's Classroom

September 2019 - Welcome to 2nd Grade!

Reading:
Now that your children are second graders, they have learned how to read alone, they know routines for reading with partners and they know how to choose their Good-Fit books.  They know that reading involves using strategies at points of difficulty and above all that reading means making sense of the text.  This unit, Taking Charge of Reading, focuses on reading with accuracy and fluency so that comprehension is the main focus of the work the reader is doing. We will be referring to the following I PICK chart throughout the year to help students choose the best book for them:
                                                                  I PICK
1. I choose a book
2. P urpose-Why do I want to read it?
3. I nterest-Does it interest me?
4. C omprehend-Am I understanding what I am reading?
5. K now-I know most of the words

Writing:
In this first unit of study, Narrative Stories/Authors as Mentors, children will write small moments from their lives.  We will study the craft of an author and incorporate these craft moves into their own writing.  The goal of this unit is that your writers will write narratives that read like real literature, stories that published authors themselves would write.

Math:
The focus of this unit is Numbers and Routines.  Students will:  order numbers greater than 100, differentiate between hours and minutes, write numbers with the correct number of digits and count coin combinations.

Science/Social Studies:
Over the next few weeks the second graders will be studying insects.  We will observe part of the life cycle of the butterfly and ladybugs!  We will also be working on building a strong community in our classroom:  getting to know each other and understanding the routines and expectations of second grade.
